White Americans seem to feel that happy songs are <em>happy<\/em> and sad songs are <em>sad<\/em>, and that, God help us, is exactly the way most white Americans sing them.<\/p>\n<p><em>(James Baldwin: Down at the Cross, in: The Fire Next Time, p. 42)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Auch wenn er an dieser Stelle ein wenig vorschnell urteilt &#8211; man denke nur an die temperamentvolle, extravagante <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anitaoday.com\/\">Anita O&#8217;Day<\/a> und ihre lebhaften Nummern zwischen Hard Swing, Bebop und Improvisation: <em>&#8222;the only white woman that belongs in the same breath as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan&#8220;<\/em> (Will Friedwald) -, so kann dem US-Amerikaner James Baldwin ein herausragendes Gesp\u00fcr f\u00fcr literarischen Witz und schwungvolles Schreiben nicht abgesprochen werden. Mit diesen Talenten griff der 1987 in S\u00fcdfrankreich verstorbenen Schriftsteller schon in jungen Jahren gesellschaftliche Problematiken auf wie die Diskriminierung und Marginalisierung schwarzer US-B\u00fcrger (Ghettoisierung als Schickung in Unfreiheit), kritisierte die Verquickung von Religion und Rasse, Kirche und Kommerz, und thematisierte auch seine homosexuelle Orientierung, lange bevor die <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African-American_Civil_Rights_Movement_(1955\u20131968)\">B\u00fcrgerrechts<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacp.org\/\">bewegung<\/a> und Freiheitsst\u00fcrmer der Sechziger sich diesen und \u00e4hnlichen Fragen zuwandten.
